History

In 1999, enso was founded as work group “Energienetzwerk Südost” to implement energy and infrastructure projects in South East Europe. In 2001, enso changed its legal structure to a limited company.

The Hereschwerke Group, respectively the family of Gilbert Frizberg, who is operating hydroelectric power plants in Styria already since 1902, has taken over 100% of the shares in 2004. In this environment, besides hydropower, enso also developed other alternative energy projects such as biogas and biomass.

Since 2007, enso GmbH has focused on the acquisition and the project development of hydroelectric power plants. At the same time, Gilbert Frizberg has extended the long-standing knowledge in the construction, revitalisation and operation of hydro power plants by investing in the turbine manufacturer Global Hydro Energy, the engineering company e2 Group and AutomationX.

In 2009, the structure of enso was adjusted: The enso Energienetzwerk Südost GmbH was renamed to enso GmbH. The investment holding company enso hydro GmbH was founded; its shares are held by the newly founded investment pool enso GmbH & Co KG. Thus, the formal basis for the future tasks of the enso with new company and shareholder structure was created.
